Black musicians have shaped classical music for centuries, and this recital honors the artists and art forms that have shaped our cultural heritage. Dvořák's Sonatina draws on music he heard from African Americans; Beethoven's Ninth Sonata was written for and premiered by the Black virtuoso violinist George Bridgetower; and Billy Childs's Incident on Larpenteur Avenue, written for Pine, responds to the killing of Philando Castile.
